The AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) is worth it in 2026 if you design, build or review systems on AWS and want proof that you can pick the right architecture for a requirement. It is the broadest AWS associate exam. It is less worth it if your work is narrowly data or ML, where a specialist associate exam proves more.
Last updated October 2026.
The exam fee is $150 USD, the standard AWS associate price. You get 65 questions in 130 minutes, 50 of them scored, and need a scaled score of 720 out of 1,000. A failed attempt means a 14-day wait and the full fee again, and the certification is valid for three years.
Time is the bigger cost. Our SAA-C03 study plan puts most candidates with some AWS experience at 6 to 8 weeks of part-time study, roughly 60 to 70 hours. Working architects often need 3 to 4 weeks; someone new to AWS should budget 10 to 12.
Passing gives access to AWS's 50% discount voucher for another exam, so a second associate certification after SAA-C03 costs half.

SAA-C03 is anchored to the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Its four domains are security (30%), resilience (26%), performance (24%) and cost (20%), and they reach across IAM, VPC design, storage, databases, messaging, disaster recovery and pricing. No other associate exam covers that much of AWS.
That breadth is the value. The Data Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer associate exams both assume you can already reason about VPCs, encryption, decoupling and cost. SAA-C03 is where that reasoning gets taught and tested, which is why it is so often the first associate exam people take. SAA-C03 is still the current version in October 2026, so preparation done now is not at risk of a version switch mid-study.
A developer, sysadmin, DevOps or cloud engineer building on AWS; a consultant or pre-sales engineer who has to defend designs; a data or ML engineer who wants the cross-service base before a specialist exam; or someone whose employer counts AWS certifications.
Completely new to AWS (start with Cloud Practitioner or plan the longer timeline); working mainly on Azure or Google Cloud; or already holding the Solutions Architect Professional, which covers the same ground in more depth.
AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions on AWS. That is a recommendation, not a prerequisite: there are none, and candidates with less experience can close the gap with the longer study plan.
| Your situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You build or run workloads on AWS | Yes | It formalizes the trade-offs you already make and fills the gaps between services you use. |
| Developer moving into cloud design | Yes | The exam is about choosing designs, which is the step from writing code to owning architecture. |
| Data engineer on AWS | Yes, first or second | Take it before or after the Data Engineer Associate; the networking and security overlap is large. |
| Non-technical role near AWS projects | Probably not yet | Cloud Practitioner or AI Practitioner fit the role better. |
| Your platform is Azure or GCP | Probably not | Every question is an AWS service choice. Take your platform's architect credential. |
The natural next step is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional: 75 questions in 180 minutes for $300 USD, with two or more years of AWS design experience recommended and, again, no formal prerequisite. Sideways moves are the Developer, CloudOps Engineer, Data Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer associate exams. The AWS certification path guide lays out which order makes sense for each starting point.

It is worth it for beginners with some hands-on AWS time, but expect the longer study plan of 10 to 12 weeks. If AWS is completely new to you, Cloud Practitioner builds the vocabulary first, though it is not required.
It helps as evidence, checked by AWS, that you can design on AWS. On its own it does not prove operating experience, so pair it with projects you can explain in an interview.
Yes. Cloud Practitioner asks what a service does, while SAA-C03 asks which of four working designs best meets a requirement, in 130 minutes instead of 90. Most people need about three times as long to prepare.
Take Solutions Architect Associate first if you are unsure, because its networking, security and cost material underpins the Data Engineer exam. Take Data Engineer first only if pipelines are your whole job and your employer values that badge more.
Yes. It is valid for three years, after which you recertify on the current version of the exam. Your 50% voucher from any passed AWS exam can be used for the recertification.
The Certified SAA-C03 course covers all four domains in 89 short chapters with four unit exams and three full-length mocks. Unit 1 is free, so you can judge the fit first.
